Biography

Thomas Gauthier-Lang is a Montreal-based saxophonist, composer, and improviser, fascinated by the chameleon-like nature of the saxophone. Through a growing practice rooted in contemporary music and extended techniques, he shapes a kaleidoscopic sound palette that reflects his curiosity and versatility. He has contributed to the creation of over thirty new works with composers from around the world, including Gabo Champagne, Alexandre David, Romain Camiolo, Beatrice Ferreira, Annija Anna Zariņa, Anak Baiharn, Alexey Logunov, Juwong Lim, and Olivier Alary.

In everything he takes on, Thomas seeks to create spaces where both artistic and personal growth can happen — places that invite a sense of wonder. He’s drawn to art that brings people together, sparks curiosity, tells stories shaped by the world’s diversity, and opens up new ways of seeing.

Since 2022, Thomas has been the artistic director and a founding member of the reed quintet 5ilience. Each of their projects is conceived as a space for dialogue, where experimentation and co-creation meet fluid artistic forms. The ensemble collaborates with creators from a wide range of disciplines and musical backgrounds — from classical and contemporary to pop and jazz. He is also a founding member of the Treffpunkt saxophone quartet and performs with the indie band Brittle Dreams.

Thomas holds a Master’s degree in Performance from the Université de Montréal, where he studied with Jean-François Guay, as well as advanced studies at the Pôle Supérieur de Paris-Boulogne-Billancourt with Jean-Michel Goury. In 2023 and 2024, he took part in the Bang on a Can and Yarn/Wire Summer Music Festivals.
